What the movies have taught me.

All missions in Mission Impossible are ultimately possible.

America is the only country that can save the world from an alien invasion.

Chewing gums are ultimate bomb defusers.

Love automatically happens when a pretty girl drops her books, and a guy helps her pick them up.

It is true love only if she thinks of him while hugging her pillow at night.

When a girl steps in to take a shower, chances are that either the phone's about to ring, or someone is trying to kill her.

Dev Anand’s face was forever inclined at an angle of 70 degrees.

The news of a natural calamity that can destroy lives is always played on a TV in a busy restaurant.

Rich people never have surnames like Kulkarni, Parekh, or Iyer.

Superheroes never have sex.

Secretaries are usually hot and sexy.

You can't shoot someone in their sleep, unless you have a pillow and a silencer attached to your gun.

The best way to impress a girl is to wait for her to look at you and brush your hand through your hair when you look at her.

Owen Wilson's life's always going through an awkward moment.

Raj Babbar was always fighting an inferiority complex.

When an expedition goes wrong, the rich French or Russian guy will always be the bad guy.

The best way to find out if she likes you is to look back at her when you walk away to check if she is looking back at you too.

Meeting people and falling in love is very easy.

People look really cool while running.

Emraan Hashmi is always struggling through life.

There are no fat women at pool side parties.

The bathtub is the best place to lie down and experience a nasty flashback.

No one ever uses a pillow that has a nice colourful cover while strangling someone with it.

If a poor guy dates a rich girl her father will offer the guy a cheque to make him stop dating her.

No news is disturbing until someone is shown removing a pair of spectacles right after they've heard about it.

A wife sewing a button on the shirt that her husband's wearing is the most effective aphrodisiac ever.

Matthew Broderick is always missing out on all the fun.

Most bad guys will have the first two buttons of their shirts open.

So, what is hell, and how bad could it be?

If you’re happy and you know it please don’t clap, but you may want to stop reading this. Because what I’m about to present to you will probably seem extremely disturbing, or at least I hope it would.

What is heaven? Living in the clouds among angels? Large open green fields, lots of flowers attracting lots of butterflies, surrounded by a lot of mountains? A fully paid vacation that has the future potential of becoming the most liked photo album on your Facebook timeline? Or is it “right now” and in this moment while you’re reading this, and making it extremely ironic for yourself, so to say. Either way, there is only one way to find out. DIE!

But what if heaven and hell are nothing but words, and the only distance between the two is 40 other words in the dictionary?

But for the sake of this boring blog post, let's just assume that hell IS the spiritual realm of evil and suffering, and just in case you think your life isn’t hell already, let's consider the most probable ways in which life could get worse after you die.

Assuming that time is a constant, not in any particular order of severity, here are a few things they might make us do and for as many years as we lived our lives before we reached hell:

  • Walk… behind a lot of people who walk painfully slowly

  • Hangout… with people who end every sentence with a “and... what else?”

  • Sleep… in a room full of babies who incessantly throw tantrums, run around and cry.

  • Read… the terms and conditions documents of every insurance policy ever sold during the time that you were alive.

  • Dance… to Anu Malik and Pritam songs.

  • Talk… to customer service all the time.

  • Work… at a construction site, when it is 40 degrees outside.

  • Listen… to the sound of the first pull of a roll of duct tape, being played on-loop.

  • Eat… all the stuff that has a pineapple, dry-fruit and/or paneer topping.

  • Drive… in the fast lane, behind cars that are extremely slow.

  • Party… without alcohol, cigarettes and ..umm.. drugs.

  • Surf the internet… to connect with people who typ lyk ths, and don’t know the difference between your and you’re or lose and loose.

  • Travel… in overcrowded local trains, wherever you go.

  • Watch movies… but only those that have Zayed Khan in them.

Considering the fact that the word "hell" is most often used by most people to express their annoyance, my guess is that hell will be a lot like living your life with that feeling you get when your toenail hits a chair leg.

10 really bad excuses to take a day off from work.

    1) Roomie did not wake you up so you terribly overslept after last night’s house party.

    2) You cannot find anything to wear to work; all your clothes are with the isthri walla whose shop is unfortunately shut today.

    3) You have a pain in the arse, so must urgently visit the piles clinic.

    4) There’s a mini-tsunami happening in your house right now as your kid broke the pipe last night with a cricket bat, and the plumber is not answering your calls.

    5) Your parents just told you that you were adopted so you need the day off to cry your heart out.

    6) Your maid was bitten by the stray dog in your building so it is your moral duty to take her to the hospital, get her a rabies shot and drive her back home.

    7) You have to join a protest against someone cutting down a tree in your lane and save the family of sparrows that has built a nest in it.

    8) Your cat stepped on your glasses and broke it, now you cannot even find your cat in the house without them.

    9) Your girlfriend is pregnant.

    10) Someone has hacked in to your Wifi at home so you have to report it to the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell and contribute to the prevention of a possible attack by the Mujahideen terror group.

Things you buy, but never use.

Our innermost desire to flaunt affluence makes us buy things that we don’t use for the purpose the things were bought for, but they come in handy someway or the other eventually.

    Dining Table
This becomes a shelf/rack/surface for keys, fruits, newspapers and any other item that you carry in your hand while entering your house or room that you would like to quickly get rid of.

    Exercise Cycle and Treadmill
This is where the towel, jeans, shirts are hung when you are too lazy to hang them where they are supposed to be.

    Yellow Pages
Ultimately used as a paper weight or in some cases, if they are fat enough, they could even make a little stool for the kids.

    Extended Warranty
No one ever finds the need to call the company back to return a TV or Refrigerator because it stopped working in the middle of the night.

    Gym membership
Arguably, this is one of the most common reasons for making New Year resolutions.

Self-Help Books, Travel guides, Cook Books
    Who reads them?

    Swiss Knife
Sole purpose: show people that you bought it, and keep it in a safe place; you may need it in case you are stuck in the middle of a rain forest, on your next adventure expedition.

    Tea Coasters
Do you even remember where you last saw them in your house?

    Wine Glasses
This is used once in a blue moon. By blue moon I mean decade.

    Anything Water-proof
You never went deep sea diving because your watch is water proof, did you?

Noise is also a genre of music.

Have you ever placed your head on your mother’s stomach while she was sleeping, just to hear those deep rumbling sounds that come from in there? And have you felt like doing it again, and again to hear those sounds? Is there any familiarity at all, since these are the same sounds you were made to hear for 9 whole months when you were tightly cuddled up in the womb?

From vehicles passing by, to the sound of running water while the maid is washing dishes, from the call of a white breasted Kingfisher in the urban jungle, to the soft sound of the wind whistling through a small gap in your window... almost EVERYTHING around you is Music. You don’t exactly have to be on a pill, or a bottle of wine, for your auditory pathway to recognize these sounds as music, and neither do you have to go foot stomping in the middle of the road to sync yourself to its rhythms.

9 noises that sound like music to my ears, even without being under the influence.

    1. Trains – the sound of a fast train is basically a slow 110 beats per minute house track, you can even move your head to and fro while chewing bubble gum, if you pay a little more attention to the breaks in between. And we all remember that great song in which Shahrukh khan danced with Mallaika Arora on a train top, yes that one. You felt like dancing like that the day you saw the video, dint you!

    2. Birds – Bird calls are probably the most common sounds that one can associate with music. Imagine a quite summer afternoon, and you can hear the loud repetitive tuk, tuk, tuk which is reminiscent of a smith beating on metal and is one of the most enduring sounds of nature – the Coppersmith Barbet. There are ofcourse innumerable such calls of birds that can catch the attention of your auditory senses on a busy day

    3. The Air-conditioner – Ever noticed how in the middle of the night when the whole world is sleeping, your AC goes bur bur bur bur bur... THAT.

    4. Printer calibrating – The noise of a Printer calibrating, along with the paper trays lifting usually produces a trippy little sample after a long day at work when you have had lots of coffee but very little to eat.

    5. A leaking tap in your apartment – Imagine a leaking tap, one drop every second or so. It is amazing how well tuned these drops can sound if you put your mind to it.

    6. The creaking of crickets outside your window late at night – this sound is so powerful, its presence usually makes everything else around us go dead silent suddenly.

    7. The ceiling fan – This is the sound that quietly runs in the background, and you hardly ever notice it because it’s just a damn ceiling fan after all. If you want to experiment, turn on the regulator at level 1 and you would start hearing the incessant metal pulses.

    8. Horny toads in the rainy season – Again, one of the most fascinating, intriguing, and wobbling melodies *ever* Someone should record those sounds and make a track out of it.

    9. The Washing Machine dryer – Psychedelic Trance anyone? If you record the last 30 seconds just before the dryer finally stops and play it over and again and add some keyboards, you’d probably become a musician.

There are just so many more noises that we selectively ignore knowing that its nothing but noise. Some of these noises however are beautiful and can be used in creation of musical samples that can be further used in songs, to bring it closer to real life.

The ringtone killed the Nokia star

From mega pixels to terabytes, camera phones to touch screen elevators, unmanned swipe machines at toll plazas to hybrid brinjals – Living with technology is now faster, easier and more convenient. Until recently, Apple and blackberry were only names of edible fruits to every household, but now they have become symbols synonymous with the latest electronic gadgets. Even though a ‘bite’ is still a toasted cheese sandwich or a vada pav for most of us, some would refer to it as the binary digit - the smallest increment of data on a computer a ‘byte’! Then there is the latest line of mini computers called Tablets. Im only glad tablets still refer to what doctors prescribe when you get a bad stomach and leak from the behind. And with the advent of traffic, travel, busy work schedules, sales targets with deadlines, life between math classes & post exam stress, presentations and meetings, and Reality Television, we have lost much control of our lives and everything comes to us in the form of choices. Pick anything you can think of doing, wearing eating or singing and they alll come with a predefined set of choices. Want to shop? there are malls, showrooms, road side vendors and sub choices in each of them respectively. Want to go for a movie? There's the mall, theater, or a download from some torrent. And want to buy a phone..? there's BB, Samsung, HTC... and that old brand that everyone loved "Nokia"

As we all know, sound is a key element of brand communication and one of the most important tools of multi-sensory branding, because it is only through video and audio that companies broadcast or deliver specific messages to large audiences. So If you think of any brand, you will notice that there are certain sounds associated with it. Intel is probably the best example, and so is Windows (the start up music). And there's our old friend Nokia - the now infamous Nokiatune. Apparently, Nokia's default ring tone - Nokiatune (also called Grande Valse) is now the world's most-played melody: Or should we rather say most 'over-played', with a billion Nokia handsets in the world, 20% people not bothering or knowing how to change the default ringtone, and the average mobile phone ringing 9 times a day, that's freaking 1.8 billion plays every day - so Basically, the Nokiatune is played somewhere in the world about 20000 times every second. This is the same tone that everyone used to love hearing on their 3310 phones, that gradually went polyphonic on the 6600's and 6210's and stayed as a feel good factor for a short while. And today the only time you get to hear the Nokia ringtone is when the user of the phone has not changed the default settings on the phone. Nokia and its users abused the ringtone so much, if you Google it, you will find every damn remix of the ringtone that you can think of, right from Arabic space boy polyphonic to a Timbuktu hip-pop remix.

Think about it- as the world got more populated, it got noisier and noisier, and our reaction was to suppress some of the noises around us. And over a period of time, we have learnt to ignore sounds: like the noise that comes out of a car of the average stupid Pune driver who would honk at the signal even when there's a red light, or that loud drilling machine sound that you would hear for days when your neighbor is renovating the house. This makes our relationship with sound more or less unconscious. Even though we are not conscious of it, these sounds are obviously affecting us. And sound and memory are very closely linked, because as i say this you can hear me say this and understand it because you remember what i just said. Now consider the amount of times you have heard the Nokia ringtone. I remember a time when i would travel in a Mumbai local to get to work, and on days that i wasn't listening to my iPod, id hear the Nokia ringtone subconsciously atleast 3-4 times and consciously a few more times before the train would get me to my destination. This overuse has been THE root cause for the downfall of the brand and the way the new generation of mobile users perceives it. Ofcourse, we cannot take away the credit from the phone's software problems or bad performance and/or the awesomeness of other operating systems such as Android. So, people tend to move away from what they associate with at a particular age, or time as they grow older. Nothing really lasts with you forever. The Nokia phone is one such similar association. It was all cool until Blackberry and Apple launched their phones in India creating much better perceptions in the minds of the audience.

To conclude, pick up that Nokia phone in your house or workplace and play the Nokiatune once - as you listen to it play, you will know exactly why you don't want to buy a Nokia anymore.

Maggi noodles is the reason we are so lazy.

How did Maggi take over our lives and become such a preferred “anytime snack”? This can probably be attributed to the fact that Maggi is one of those brands that gets you when you are really young, and more or less stays in your kitchen cabinet for the rest of your life, since your kids would go through the same thing, at a different time in your life of course. Strikingly, you may also find similar behavioral patterns in cigarettes or chocolates; fortunately, the only difference is that Maggi isn’t such an addiction or looked down upon by society or calorie Nazis.

When I was younger, I ate Maggi just to join a particular Maggi club. They made me mail them logo cut-outs from Maggi packets and in return they'd sent me little cardboard toys that would fly with much effort. Kids nowadays eat Maggi even without such innovative incentives, since it's the first thing they learn about their kitchen after getting to know where the Bournvita, or pack of biscuits is stored. I'm sure that can be exciting to some age groups, and that’s definitely more like an intellectual upgrade to kids who would otherwise spend their time dressing up Barbie dolls.

Leaving breakfast cereal aside, Maggi is the only ready-to-cook food that most parents let their children eat with very little fuss, since they probably consider it a better alternative to living through the risks of letting them eat at the road side Bhel or Dhabeli walla where the guy just mashed potatoes with the same hands that went down other “inappropriate” places a few minutes ago, and go down there multiple times through every single working day otherwise. Besides, they made a little kid go “Taste bhi! Health bhi!” in their ad. And Maggi screams of how healthy it is.. With Calcium, Atta et al mentioned all over their covers anyway. And if that wasn’t enough they decided to run a campaign showing passport photos of normal, healthy looking people, like the ones from the flat next door, on their covers describing how they like their Maggi. Smart idea, considering there are similar situations where smoking a cigarette, drinking tea or eating a chocolate bar fits in just perfectly instead of eating Maggi.

Leaving aside the fact that the marketing dept. and the agencies are obviously doing a great job in making you believe that Maggi is really healthy, deep down in your intestines, you do know it's not. The real reason for Maggi and its awesomeness is our laziness, and not wanting to cook anything else at that hour. You know, every time someone comes home hungry late at nigt, the google recipe cook in you dies a little. THAT is where Maggi comes in.. And then at some point in time also came this discovery of adding vegetables and various other ingredients to simply make the Maggi taste better.

Also, Maggi has a predefined taste. So what you expect is what you get. Unlike calling for Biryani from the new restaurant one hungry night only to find that it had too much salt or the delivery boy visited 10 other houses before finally blessing you with his visit.

And then, one of the major reasons that Maggi works for some people is because they simply don’t know how to cook anything else. And they do not know how to cook anything else mostly because Maggi fits in from time to time preventing them from ever broadening their horizons.

And finally, with Google, Facebook, and the whole lets eat out or order online thing coming in to play, maggi, even though was invented at a time when there was no convenience of online shopping or google, somehow goes well with this generation that swears by everything that quick, and easy-to-cook. Easily DIY.

To conclude, if you read the pointers above, all of them point towards the same notion- We are lazy, hence we love to eat Maggi. And Even after reading this amazing blog post, or conclusive report on why we love Maggi so much, if you still end up making Maggi tonight because you only genuinely crave for the Maggi Masala taste, it only means the ads and the photo mug shots on the cover don’t mean anything to you. You my friend are a true Maggi lover. And a lazy person too.

Marriage, or an abnormal Dopamine Receptor Signal.

My best friend recently got married. I will, of course, not mention her name here for obvious reasons. But I got a brief account of all events that occurred before the wedding since I am the best friend and I also fit in to an advisory role and occasionally became the shoulder to cry on. Oh' the horrors of accepting this idea called "Arranged Marriage". When you go through it.. eventually, Arranged marriages become as much a culture shock to you as love marriage seems to your parents (atleast to the ones that dont approve of it). One of the things she would repeatedly say, while crying over the phone "I had never thought it would happen to me.. like this"

Background: She was in the states, and in a live-in relationship for over a year before she realized the guy was not the right one (since, he couldn’t commit to a future, or marriage and stuff or talk to his parents about her) and so she dumped him and finally succumbed to the parental pressure to get married at what I felt was a rather young age. Yes, 24 is young if you are a woman, and even younger if you are a guy, considering that it is between the ages 26-30 that guys get really horny and would make love to anything that comes their way* (*citation needed of course). Initially it started off with the break-up, then there were lots of tears, and finally the parental pressure that led to the "this-world-is-cruel-my-life-sucks-I-just-want-to-die-or-runaway" phase. But like all other Indian women, she quietly slipped in and became a part of this institution called Marriage. It wasn’t easy to get through this though. And to an extent, i feel guilty for talking her into accepting it at times. But at that time, it seemed like the only, and maybe best possible solution.

So here’s a short description of how it all happened.

    1) Brain-Storming and Ideation – Here the parents approached her, cajoled and groomed her into accepting the idea of marriage. This period lasted for over 3 months. With lots of arguments, drunk evenings and late night fights with the Parents. Imagine giving your dog a bath for the first time. yes, that. But the parents won. They always do. This is the same thing your boss does most of the time, like talking you into doing something for him/ her. You know you don’t really have a choice, but fight you may.

    2) Market Research – Second stage kicks in once the victim has accepted her fate and agreed to walk around the fire. Here the parents were "out there" looking for prospective boys for their daughter. Sources included a) Over inquisitive close relatives, b) Sindhi match maker aunties who get people married for blessings and a small (undisclosed) gift, c) Close family friends, d) Shaadi.com, Jeevansaathi.com, Bharathmatrimony.com etc.

    3) Collating Data - Here all gathered information from the above mentioned sources is put together and segregated in an orderly manner so the victim can easily access it, and decide who she will spend the rest of her sodding life with. Imagine making a 80 slide Power point presentation to sell your product to your client. Yes, the equivalent of that.

    4) Short-listing – So after finding highly educated double post grads who have studied in America and worked everywhere else in the world but India, the prospective ones were selected based on how wealthy the families are, and then they narrowed down the list and eliminated some of the boys (mostly based on the their Facebook profile, not-so-charming looks and Father’s bank balance)

    5) First draft – Photos were presented to my friend. She had to look at the photographs, visit their Linkdin, Facebook, Orkut, and Hi5 profiles, and decide whether she’d like to meet the boy (see: 6. the Pitch) or not. So she brought the list further down to two prospective boys. Being the best friend, my approval was obviously taken. After scrolling through their public profile on LinkdIn and a few phone calls to people who might know him, it was finally down to one boy. Engineer – MBA – MSC. Total win.

    6) The Pitch – The meeting was set up on a Sunday afternoon at his bungalow in Juhu. The guy seemed "okay" to my friend when they met for the first time. She said "he was sweet, kept asking me if I was comfortable, and even offered me Ice-tea". While the parents spoke about how many trips they make to Europe in a year, who designed their living room curtains and exchanged other pleasantries, my friend and the engineer – MBA – MSC were asked to go on a drive. Both put their best foot forward, spoke about their life plans and mutually decided that this CAN work out. So basically, it was a “yes”.

    7) Social Networking – First thing now, is to add each other on facebook and Gtalk, without which we can no longer survive in this cruel world. So they added each other on Gtalk, and got to know each other a little more. Our boy seemed quite flirtatious on the internet, but not as much in person. But words carry lot of weight. In a few chat conversations and Skype sessions, here is where they finally fell in love. On Skype. And the Facebook tagged pics added to the "feeling" of course.

    8) Deliverables - This was strictly between the parents. But of what i could gather, there was a formidable amount of numbers involved. Also, a Honda City was presented as a gift to the boy by the best friend's father. How sweet. I'm assuming this was predecided at this stage before the wedding.

    9) Final cut – After a million and one Gtalk, Skype and Facebook interactions, dinner meetings, coffee shop rendezvous’ finally both parties in question met again and decided the engagement and wedding dates. Im sure they also discussed who will pay for what and such. But that's it.

    Drum roll.

And another one bites the dust.

Tonight my best friend is happily married. And like a million other married women, trying hard to shape the guy into being her ideal husband. Hopefully, someday she will succeed. Even if she doesn't, she'll pretend to be happy. That's what our society teaches us anyway. And then they will soon make babies, and also force me to get married every time I meet them, so they can spread the happy disease.. but that’s a different story altogether. All this is really sweet, especially considering that without the internet, this thing called love would have never bloomed between them as easily as it did. So, marriages maybe made in heaven; but they are certainly arranged on the Internet!

Q: Now that the series is done and India have lost, what next? Dhoni: Its time to move on, Aircel of course.

So much for Murphy's law - here is our very own "Burphy's" law

    Burphy's Law

If there are chances that you’ll grow fatter this diwali, then probably, you will.

Burphy's law is an adage in our eastern culture that broadly observes how things go wrong during Diwali, even without us realizing that they did. Having said that, the knowledge of Burphy's law will not  help in any given undesired situation. And if you do apply Burphy's law, sadly it will no longer be applicable.

#10 – Feelings of regret while on the shitpot the following morning can only be attributed to the number of kaju & anjeer burphys you ate the night before.

#9 – The light you see at the end of the tunnel is actually a phuljhari.

#8 – The only thing that goes higher than a Diwali rocket is your budget for Diwali expenses every year.

#7 – How good you look in your newly bought clothes is directly proportionate to the chances of the fire cracker sparks lighting burns in it.

#6 – The first myth of Diwali is that it’s a festival of lights.

    # 5 – The number of relatives in your house the day of the Laxmi pujan is directly proportionate to how successful you are as a human being.

    # 4 – The amount of time spent in drawing the front door Rangoli varies directly with the chances of the neighborhood kids stepping on it.

    # 3 – How good the current market conditions are can be judged by the thickness of the smog blanket on your city, the consecutive day after Diwali.

    # 2 – The higher up you are, the more the happy diwali sms forwards you are rewarded with.

    # 1 – Eco-friendly Diwali is an oxymoron.

    Logic for Beginners - 1

If you honk out loud at a signal; all the cars in front of you wont suddenly give way to your highness. We, the lesser souls, are in a hurry too

If you don't know how to use something even after reading the instructions, then there is no point blaming  customer service! Self help is probably not what you are good at.

If there is nothing in the refrigerator, its better to look elsewhere instead of opening it again and again in anticipation of the freezer suddenly cooking up something for you!

If your car doesn't start, it does not necessarily mean that the neighbour's evil eye has made the battery flat!

Holding an electric guitar and lip synching to Anu malik's latest chart buster, doesn't make you a rock star of Indian cinema.

When at the movies, yelling loudly into the phone does not make your voice any clearer to the person calling you.

On twitter, by 'blocking' the user & protecting your own tweets, post the twitter argument, you are not proving that you won it!

By trying the same outfit 10 times and posing in front of the mirror, you will not look any prettier than you did the first time you tried it.

Asking the same question by simply re-framing the sentence, will not always yield a different answer.

Taking your best friend's dietitian's advice to skip the 8 pm meal, will not make you any slimmer than it would by not taking the advice at all.

Food prepared at home is not always much safer than restaurant food. The worms in the unwashed cauliflowers can cause more food-borne illness than Joshi wadevale's sweat induced vada pav.

By adding an extra letter to your name, & choosing a lucky number God wont come flying out of the skies suddenly, and grant you success.

Scoring higher than your colleague in an Online IQ test does not exactly make you a smarter than him/her and you will still have to slog it out for the promotion.

10 things about Pune you can’t miss, unless you're blind!

You wake up from your shallow slumber, thanks to the sudden hollering of the bus conductor - He is that short guy with a loud voice who sits beside the bus driver, and could easily win salesman of the year for selling his bus seats to prospects looking for a ride to Pune. And we all know that if he pushes himself anymore he can even sell sand to the Arabs, forget about that lone seat to a guy who is already tired of waiting for another alternative! So, you hear this guy yelling out “Wakad junction; chalo, wakad junction” loudly, as if he’s addressing a bunch of deaf people. Soon, he drops you at your destination, and you find yourself swarmed by a congregation of Rickshaw drivers wanting to take over your wallet and drop you wherever you want, for as much money as they want! Welcome to Pune – the city of the conservative cosmopolitans.

After living here for a little more than a year I have come to realize that there is something about this city that no adjective in the dictionary can describe. Well, for starters, I would have looked for words like vibrant, urban, uptown, rich, well-planned, civic, cosmopolitan etc. but if you’ve lived in Pune, you will agree that none of these words wholly describe the city and her soul. Needless to say, that all of those words and many more would fit very easily in to a book called “Me Punekar”, if someone were to literally write it, that is. But, if I were to tell you about the city as such, I would merely be talking about the good weather, Student population, Urbanisation etc. Whereas, if you ask me about Bombay – then I would go - The Newyork of the east, or hey, that’s one place that never sleeps, or that’s where Amitabh became Big B.. yada yada. Pune, on the other hand is like a shadow of a metro, mostly. It’s that place where at least one person you know or have known at some point in your life, has studied at, and/or graduated from. According to Wikipedia and some 5th standard geography textbooks Pune is the 7th metro city in India. But the way I look at it, Pune is a city that’s stuck somewhere between a large village and a metro. It's one of those cities that grew bigger and bigger from a village and ultimately ended up as a town city – but obviously, the social infrastructure, business environment, real estate costs, etc have all made Pune a metro among other metros.

Unlike Mumbai, or Delhi, Pune’s culture is more conservative and people more cultured if I can safely say that. But at the same time, a large number of migrants living here make it a fairly cosmopolitan culture encouraging different art festivals, events, cuisines, movies from around the world. That, along with your friends who are living here, makes this place somewhat exciting, but not as exciting as Goa, obviously. Here are some things that will not miss your observation, considering you spend enough time here, and are not too drunk or stoned to notice them.

    1)      Rickshaws on the footpath – I have been told that this is the main reason Pune will not make it to the 50 best walking cities in the world surveyed by the International Podiatric Medical Association! Now, how can they list us, when a) we dont have too many footpaths, and b) the few existing ones are used as parking space for 6 seater tum-tum rickshaws.

    2)      Sunbathing in the summer – The statement, “you shall burn in hell” is not much of a curse for the average punekar – because the average punekar knows that “burning in hell” can’t be worse than riding a bike in the Pune summer heat! Breaking News: Akshay kumar will be using sun bathing in Pune as one of the upcoming dare stunts in the next season of “khataron ke khiladi”. Wait for it; you will burn while watching it!

    3)      Driving manners – Mumbai is full of lousy Sunday drivers on a Sunday while, Pune is full of such Sunday drivers everyday. There are no traffic rules in Pune, unless a traffic cop is visible on the horizon. Driving on the wrong side of the road is a way of life, as much as bad parking or tripling on motor bikes is.

    4)       I have 2 hands, 2 legs, and 2 wheels – Imagine that Pune is this huge bee hive… then the myriad scooters and bikes would obviously be the bees, coming in from every direction. Fact is that Pune has more number of bikes than all of Mumbai’s vehicles put together. Keeping that in mind, Yash chopra is planning on making Dhoom 3 soon and most sequences are to be shot on Pune roads, because they won’t need extras for the group biker scenes, and almost every punekar looks better than Uday Chopra.

    5)      Ninjas on Bikes – If you haven’t noticed this sub-specie of humans that mostly likes to travels on bikes alone or in pairs, wearing masks and arm warmers - fully covered from face down to arms, and legs – then you seriously need to consider improving your observation by meditating or something. This rare specie of neo-humans is also known as a ninja, and is mainly found in and around Pune. There are rumours that some of them ninjas have migrated to Ahemdabad and Surat, thanks to similar heat conditions found in those cities. This hominid species evolved due to the unbearable rays of the sun and the effect it has on their fair, and lovely skin.

    6)      Road side celebration concerts and social events – Whether it is a wedding baraat, or Ganesh utsav, an unknown hindu festival, or simply some other occasion to celebrate, the punekar does it in style! Their recipe for celebration involves a road (any road, regardless of the ongoing traffic situation), a truck/ trailer, 10 big speakers that collectively make enough noise to send signals to intelligent life forms on the moon, and a DJ – and to this add a few hundred people frantically dancing on the road. And you have a full on concert, not just a Ganesh utsav visargan or durga puja!  If you haven’t seen this, try visiting Pune during Gokulashtami, or durga puja and you will know how annoying noise pollution + uncontrolled traffic can get!

    7)      Rain that never pours cats and dogs - Pune serves a quivering environment for a calm & sober hopper but the rains play very little role in this. Since, here it's never going to rain like it did in “The Day After Tomorrow.” Unlike Cherapungi, Pune’s rain mostly seems scanty or such that it will rain heavily for a few minutes, and then steady down to a drizzle, but this drizzle which will stay long enough to get you wet like Shahrukh khan in a love song from a Kjo movie.

    8)      Customer is not god, only human – Like most other tier II cities, Pune too is very low on customer service. Whether it be a semi posh restaurant, or your regular paan walla, the management won’t bend their rules to wow you. So what if you are a customer, after all you are human too, just like everyone else. The only saving grace is that atleast they don’t shut shop during the afternoons for their private naps, the way gujjus in most of Gujarat do.

    9)      Thank family & neighbour it’s Friday – Life rapidly changes the moment the weekend kicks in! No restaurant, mall, theatre, or park is found empty from Friday night onwards all the way till Sunday! Weekend is all about foot fall in Pune primarily because the Punekar likes to hangout in groups. I mean large groups. Even for an ordinary outing to a mall, He likes to take his wife, kids, wife’s sister & her husband and their kids, and sometimes the parents and neighbours too!

    10)  Bakeries by the dozen – Yes yes, I know you thought of the terrorising german bakery blast! But hey, that’s not the only bakery in Pune. Almost every street has a couple of bakeries and they all sell the same stuff! For instance, there is a ‘Poona bakery’, and then there is also ‘New Poona bakery’! Try it, and enjoy the similarity!

    Jason Statham, God #Sameguy

Firstly, I know im not the first guy on the internet to shower praises for the greatest Hollywood action hero ever born! Infact, im quite aware that im probably one of the slowest people on the internet to realise this burning admiration for his highness, Jason Statham - The lord of pure action. But mind you, that in no way makes me lesser fan, because my awe for this guy goes beyond this blog and cannot be confined merely to these statements of praise! And it’s not just me, but anyone having watched Transporter 3 and Crank 2 will be tempted to tell the world about their overwhelming feelings of wonder and admiration for this super hero of action movies.

Most of his movies are unapologetic audience pleasers, from an actor who isn’t worried about returning to previous roles to churn out fresh films with very little or no difference in the script. There is not an iota of reinvention or innovation in the script of the sequels, nor is there much change to the role played by Statham. Yet, these are hard core entertainers thanks to Jason’s impeccable, irreplaceable style and on screen persona.

This maybe one of the reasons for Jason Statham movies being such favorites for movie channels, since they air them more than those cola adverts! For instance, Star Movies shamelessly adds Statham movies to almost every weekend movie campaign of theirs. Because of this, I have been lucky enough to watch Transporter 3 six times. I loved the movie so much; I even downloaded the HD version from a torrent site, and am now just a few bucks away from buying the original DVD and a life size wall poster, so that I can wake up every morning and worship him! If you haven’t seen the movie.. then I safely presume that you probably don’t watch much Star movies. Jason Statham is reason enough to watch these movie channels!

If you don’t believe me, try watching a Statham movie and liberate yourself from the Misery of not knowing his greatness! Any Jason Statham movie really, should show you something that goes beyond those Gun shot sequences, car chases or spine-twisting brawls. You'll see just how easily he is a star in every move of his and the very look in his eyes. If you watch a movie like Crank (an adrenaline rush of a movie that lasts for 88 min) in which Statham plays a hitman who's injected with a toxin that will kill him if he lets his heart rate dip below the speed of light, you'll see the same hungry look that Sly stallone had in Rambo, or Sunny Deol had in Ghayal. And if you like Crank, let me tell you that Crank 2 is like Crank multiplied by Crank! It’s so full of adrenaline it will give you a head rush. I even read somewhere, that doctors have advised their heart patients to refrain from watching the movie for all good reasons.

So, here are a few facts collected about the MAN. Most of these are surprisingly true, but im sure you won’t be too surprised if you have seen a Statham movie!

    # After watching Transporter 3, God now visits the church and prays to Jason Statham.

    # Jason Statham is to Action, what God is to Religion!

    # There maybe many gods in this world. But there is only One Jason Statham

#In Crank, Jason got horny. Today, as a result, there are many gods!

    # In Transporter 2 Jason Statham runs faster than himself! Beat that chuck!

    # When Jason enters a room, he doesn't turn the lights on, but the darkness gets turned off automatically

    # He who doesn’t like Jason Statham obviously has a death wish!

    # There are no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, Jason Statham lives in England!

    # After Crank 2 and Transporter 3.. there is obviously no room for Rambo 5 in Hollywood.

    # Transporter movies make most men want to turn Gay, only so that they could fantasize about Jason

    # After seeing Jason Statham in Crank, Rubert Ludlum has decided not to write any more Jason Bourne books! #nochance

    # When they introduced a wax statue of Jason Statham at Madame Tussauds, the rest of the statues started to melt with his sheer presence #Fact

    # If Ian Flemming was alive, he would have renamed James Bond, to Jason Statham!

#Jason was given a role in ‘The Expendables’ only because Sly Stallone knew no one would want to watch the movie otherwise!

Always remember, when you go for a Jason Statham flick, you get pure testosterone filled manly action, not some cheesy arse predictable Rambo or James bond movie! For each role that he plays, Statham simply assumes that his character is a perpetually hungover badass and is more or less so annoyed at everything in the world that he could strangle the sodding camera while the movie is being shot! Statham's acting career ended with Lock stock, since then it only has been an action career!

The Society of the Facebook and Twitter Conscious People

This might come off as a rant, and I have no regret if it does, or if you feel offended. Maybe, you should feel offended if you fit into the “Society of the FB and Twitter conscious people.” This society was formed the day some of you attention grabbing whores got together on the internet and took Facebook and then twitter to a whole new level. (Please note that Im not mentioning “orkut” here, because this whole post will become boring with the very mention of it.)

Since the advent of FB and twitter, the internet has become this huge social networking platform! Every website has those twitter and Fb logos. Anything you do on or off the internet can be published on your twitter or facebook profile! Everyone’s having fun, yes. Facebook is for networking. And Twitter is for bloggers who have grown out of the FB clutch apparently! The only difference between the two is the level of IQ between the user groups. FB, being used by the mentally challenged, ofcourse.

Picture this: Four friends. 2 girls and 2 guys. A famous pub in Pune. Music and Beer. As the beer intake is enhanced, there is a sudden increase in the number of digital camera flashes, damn it felt like a press conference with background retro music!  2 girls. 2 guys. 3 cameras. Holy mother of photography – they must have a shared over a 1000 pictures between them in less than 100 minutes – that makes it 10 pictures per minute. Guinness records, are you listening!?

O.k. Honestly, I don’t have a problem if you take a million pictures of your friends and add it to that album called good times of the past or whatever. I seriously don’t. Who am I to interfere with my opinions about your habits? But what im more concerned about is the motive behind the photography. What is it that you are doing here - is it just a photograph? A memory captured? Or really, a facebook moment that may some how elevate your current status on the networking site among your peers. Photography is an art. A Hobby, a way of life for some, and a passion to others, please don’t make a dick out of it this way! When the intention behind the photograph is only and only “facebook” - it makes you a part of the Society of the FB and Twitter conscious people. Here are some of the other behavioral and personality traits that the members of this society demonstrate. Now, im not asking you to agree or disagree to these points. They are merely my  observations.

    -         You live off Facebook and twitter. Some part of your self-confidence and temporary happiness comes from Re-tweets, followers, and photo comments. Within this safe cocoon, you’re liked, appreciated and respected. Outside it, you’re an alarming shithead! To further elaborate this, there are some micro pointers listed below

    a)      Your Twitter profile picture is the picture in which you have looked the best. Ever. Evaaargh!
    b)      You change your FB display picture every 3-4 days. You change it, and then re-change it back as if, by changing it, some sad part of your life is actually going to change with it! Well, I have news for you – most of us don’t even bother looking at your new profile pictures, and it simply gets buried in our news feed!
    c)      Before getting the 100 followers, you were a ‘nobody’ in your own eyes on the social websites. Infact, you followed a 110 to get the 100 followers!
    d)      In reality, your sense of humor is not half as good as it is on these websites, thanks to Google ofcourse!
    e)      If I were to see you at the station, in the class room or even in at my workplace, I wouldn’t even notice you as a YOU!
    f)        You update us when you board the bus/train/ taxi/ airplane as if we are all somehow waiting to know where you are and eagerly anticipating your next move. The fact is, mostly, a response on these websites is generated only because there are other people out there just like you who want a response when they tweet about their Saturday night splurge or delayed flights! Get it?
    g)      You feel compelled to @friend one of your followers who has mentioned @you in a tweet
    h)      Birds of a feather flock together. Members of the Society of the FB and Twitter conscious people hang out together. They talk over the phone, and then write on each others wall as if writing on facebook walls were rapidly going out of style. Hell, I have even seen 2 girls tweeting their @nicknames while sitting opposite each other in the same restaurant! #Lame
    i)        Your day doesn’t start until you update your tweeples with a good morning, and get a 100 tweet hugs back!
    j)        Remove FB, Twitter and other social websites from the internet and you wont know what the internet is for in the first place. Without them social networking websites the internet solves no or very little purpose. Checking mail maybe.
    k)      On similar lines, any internet work station that you get to access is first used to check the Fb and twitter updates. Then, follows the E-mail inbox.
    l)        You wake up in the middle of the night when your QWERTY phone buzzes to check who commented on your Fb profile picture, or @mentioned you!

    -         You think those guys who follow you, post comments and like your photos, and status updates have a rather high opinion of you. Always remember Everyone on FB and twitter is a self-promoting lunatic!

    -         You will die or atleast have a nervous breakdown if someone on the social media website insults you or pokes fun at your expense. OMG! You will not be able to sleep for nights unless you get back at them and ensure that your circle of fans have not lost “respect” for thee highness! Breaking News: you are a techno-anxious freak. You need to stop taking yourself so seriously on these social networking websites. No one cares what people here say or do. It’s the internet for crying out loud, anything goes. The internet is for porn, not for social networking! #fact

    -         For real life problems, you find a way to involve your internet buddies by asking them for advice and also showing them how deep and thoughtful you are.

You facebook and twitter conscious people make me want to strangle the living souls out of you. Beware, the next time you open your mouth to say "hey, let me click a snap and tag you on fb.." I might be on the next table, anonymously sipping on my beer and plotting my next murder victim! haaargh!

Years before FB and twitter came into existence, some of us used to happily scan the internet meet some interesting people and have some very meaningful conversations about music, Movies books etc and grow with each others preferences, similar tastes, and likes. Now, FB, with the million posers & wannabe photo comment seekers, and twitter, with another million blogging losers who have spent more than half their life talking to their blogs, have both unified into a whole country of social networking leeches on the internet. They have impregnated the internet with the members of the Society of the FB and twitter conscious people!
